Possession with عِنْدَ and لِـ التَّعْبِيرُ عَنِ الْمِلْكِيَّةِ بِـ«عِنْدَ» وَ«لِـ»

Say who has something, who it belongs to and who physically has it with them—without forcing one English “have” structure onto every Arabic meaning.

عِنْدَhas/available
لِـbelongs/for
مَعَphysically with

Arabic expresses “have” through relationships

Instead of relying on one verb equivalent to English “have”, Arabic often locates an item with someone or marks it as belonging to someone.

عِنْدِي قَلَمٌ.
I have a pen.Literally: a pen is at/with me.
هَذَا الْقَلَمُ لِي.
This pen is mine. The prepositional predicate marks ownership.
الْقَلَمُ مَعِي.
The pen is with me.The pen is physically with me now.
عِنْدَهَا فِكْرَةٌ جَيِّدَةٌ.
She has a good idea.عِنْدَ also handles abstract possession.

Choose your route

Build عِنْدَ and لِـ forms, then learn when each one is natural.

Core

  • Use عِنْدِي, عِنْدَكَ and عِنْدَهُ in short possession statements.
  • Use لِي, لَكَ and لَهُ for belonging.
  • Ask and answer simple possession questions.

Develop

  • Control the complete pronoun families.
  • Negate possession and use dual/plural items.
  • Distinguish عِنْدَ, لِـ and مَعَ.

Stretch

  • Analyse case in delayed possessed nouns.
  • Use allocation and abstract possession precisely.
  • Edit extended answers for natural choice and reference.

Readiness check

Choose the marker that matches “have”, “belongs to” or “is with”.

🔎 Possession Marker Starter

0/6

1. Choose “I have a pen.”

2. Choose “This book is mine.”

3. Which form means “you have” to one female?

4. Which question asks “Whose is this?”

5. Which phrase means “with me/on my person”?

6. In عِنْدِي كِتَابٌ, what case is the item normally in a fully marked model?

4

عِنْدَ + pronoun: possession and availability

The locator عِنْدَ combines with pronoun endings to mean “at/with someone” and commonly “someone has”.

PersonFormModel
Iعِنْدِيعِنْدِي سُؤَالٌ.

they m./mixed pl.عِنْدَهُمْعِنْدَهُمْ مَشْرُوعٌ.
they f. pl.عِنْدَهُنَّعِنْدَهُنَّ حِصَّةٌ.
Case pattern: in a fully marked model, the possessed item is normally nominative as the delayed topic: عِنْدِي كِتَابٌ, عِنْدِي سَيَّارَتَانِ, عِنْدِي كُتُبٌ. The pronoun after عِنْدَ is the relational complement.

✅ Mini-check: عِنْدَ family

0/4

1. Choose “we have”.

2. Choose “they have” for two people.

3. Choose “you have” for a feminine plural group.

4. Choose “she has a new idea.”

5

لِـ + noun or pronoun: belonging and allocation

The preposition لِـ marks who something belongs to, is intended for, or is allocated to.

PersonCombined formModel
meلِيهَذَا لِي.
usلَنَاهَذَا الْمَشْرُوعُ لَنَا.

them m./mixed pl.لَهُمْالْقَرَارُ لَهُمْ.
them f. pl.لَهُنَّالْكُتُبُ لَهُنَّ.

Before a definite noun, لِـ joins the article and the alif is omitted in spelling: لِلْمُعَلِّمِ, لِلطُّلَّابِ. With the first-person suffix, the standard form is لِي.

✅ Mini-check: لِـ family

0/4

1. Choose “This seat is for you” to one male.

2. Choose “The decision is theirs” for a masculine/mixed group.

3. Choose “This is ours.”

4. What happens in لِـ + ـِي?

6

Choose by meaning: عِنْدَ, لِـ or مَعَ

The three structures overlap in English translation but focus on different relationships.

Intended meaningBest core structureExample
someone has / something is available to themعِنْدَعِنْدِي وَقْتٌ.
something belongs to / is allocated to someoneلِـهَذَا الْمَكْتَبُ لِي.
something is physically with someone nowمَعَجَوَازُ السَّفَرِ مَعِي.
عِنْدِي سَيَّارَةٌ.
I have a car.Neutral possession or availability.
السَّيَّارَةُ لِي.
The car is mine.Explicit ownership.
السَّيَّارَةُ مَعِي الْيَوْمَ.
The car is with me today.Current physical control; it need not be owned by me.
عِنْدِي فِكْرَةٌ، وَلَكِنَّ الْقَرَارَ لِلْمُدِيرِ.
I have an idea, but the decision belongs to the manager.Abstract possession versus authority/allocation.

✅ Mini-check: choose the relationship

0/4

1. Choose “I have time.”

2. Choose “This time slot is mine.”

3. Choose “I have the keys with me.”

4. Which sentence can mean “I own a car” in neutral everyday Arabic?

7

Questions and negation

Possession becomes useful when learners can ask, deny, clarify and correct.

PurposePatternExample
Ask whether someone has somethingهَلْ عِنْدَ + pronoun + itemهَلْ عِنْدَكِ سُؤَالٌ؟
Ask what someone hasمَاذَا عِنْدَ + pronounمَاذَا عِنْدَكُمْ؟
Ask ownershipلِمَنْ + itemلِمَنْ هَذِهِ الْحَقِيبَةُ؟
Answer ownershipitem + لِـ + pronounهِيَ لَهَا.
Negate possessionلَيْسَ عِنْدَ + pronoun + itemلَيْسَ عِنْدِي وَقْتٌ.
Negate ownershipitem + لَيْسَ لِـ + pronoun / لَيْسَ item لِـهَذَا الْكِتَابُ لَيْسَ لِي.
Do not use bare لَا before عِنْدَ as the default formal pattern. For clear MSA, use لَيْسَ عِنْدِي... or a suitable verbal alternative such as لَا أَمْلِكُ... when literal ownership is intended.

✅ Mini-check: ask and negate

0/4

1. Choose “I do not have a pen.”

2. Choose “Do you have a question?” to one female.

3. Choose “Whose bag is this?”

4. Choose the answer “It is hers.”

8

Number and agreement of the possessed item

The owner marker stays fixed while the item changes for gender and number.

Item typeModelWhat to notice
Masculine singularعِنْدَهَا قَلَمٌ جَدِيدٌ.item and adjective nominative masculine
Feminine singularعِنْدَهُ سَيَّارَةٌ جَدِيدَةٌ.item and adjective nominative feminine
Dualعِنْدَهُمَا طِفْلَانِ.nominative dual
Human masculine pluralعِنْدَنَا مُعَلِّمُونَ مُخْلِصُونَ.full human plural agreement
Non-human pluralعِنْدِي كُتُبٌ مُفِيدَةٌ.feminine singular adjective

The pronoun inside عِنْدَهَا identifies the owner. It does not force the possessed noun to be feminine; the item keeps its own gender and number.

9

Combine all three possession systems

Strong answers switch naturally among suffixes, iḍāfa, عِنْدَ and لِـ.

  1. Find one possessive suffix.
  2. Find one iḍāfa.
  3. Find عِنْدَ for possession.
  4. Find لِـ for ownership/purpose.
  5. Find مَعَ for physical accompaniment.
Range with purpose: variety is valuable when each structure carries a different relationship. Do not replace a natural simple form merely to sound complex.
