A

Why time frames matter

Cambridge speaking and writing require learners to move beyond one-word answers. A precise time expression helps the listener understand whether an event happened, is happening, happens regularly or will happen.

Core

Match common past, present and future expressions to suitable verbs.

Develop

Move confidently between three time frames in one answer.

Stretch

Use past habit, arranged future and future negation with accurate forms.

The key principle: the time expression does not replace the tense. The verb form, future marker and context must work together.

🔎 Entry Check

0/6

1. Choose the sentence with a clear past time frame.

2. Choose the sentence with a clear future time frame.

3. Which expression means “at the moment / currently”?

4. Which sentence contains a tense-time mismatch?

5. What does a time adverb do?

6. Which is the clearest IGCSE answer for “I will travel tomorrow”?

1

Past time frame الزَّمَنُ الْمَاضِي

Past time expressions confirm that an event is completed or locate it in an earlier period.

ExpressionMeaningModel
أَمْسِyesterdayلَعِبْتُ كُرَةَ الْقَدَمِ أَمْسِ.
أَوَّلَ أَمْسِthe day before yesterdayوَصَلَتِ الرِّسَالَةُ أَوَّلَ أَمْسِ.

مُنْذُ سَنَةٍfor/since a year ago, depending on structureبَدَأْتُ دِرَاسَةَ الْعَرَبِيَّةِ مُنْذُ سَنَةٍ.
Develop: كُنْتُ أَدْرُسُ فِي الْمَسَاءِ can describe a past habit: “I used to study in the evening.”

↩️ Past Check

0/5

1. Complete: ___ ذَهَبْتُ إِلَى الطَّبِيبِ.

2. Choose “last week”.

3. Choose “I used to / usually studied in the evening” at a simple practical level.

4. Which phrase means “the day before yesterday”?

5. Repair: زُرْتُهُ غَدًا.

2

Present and habitual time الْحَاضِرُ وَالْعَادَةُ

The Arabic present form can describe what is happening now or what happens regularly. The adverbial context makes the intended meaning clear.

Happening now

أَكْتُبُ الآنَ.
فِي الْوَقْتِ الْحَالِيِّ أَعْمَلُ مِنَ الْمَنْزِلِ.

Regular or repeated

أَذْهَبُ إِلَى الْمَدْرَسَةِ كُلَّ يَوْمٍ.
أَتَدَرَّبُ مَرَّتَيْنِ فِي الأُسْبُوعِ.
أَقْرَأُ غَالِبًا قَبْلَ النَّوْمِ.

Notice: the same present verb form can mean “I study” or “I am studying.” Words such as الآنَ and كُلَّ يَوْمٍ clarify the frame.

⏺️ Present Check

0/5

1. Choose “I am writing now.”

2. Choose a habitual present sentence.

3. Which word often signals frequency rather than one point in time?

4. Choose “currently, I live in London.”

3

Future time frame زَمَنُ الْمُسْتَقْبَلِ

For clear learner communication, combine a future marker with the present verb form and an appropriate future expression.

PatternUseExample
سَـ + الْمُضَارِعُcommon, close or neutral futureسَأُسَافِرُ غَدًا.
سَوْفَ + الْمُضَارِعُmore separate/formal or emphatic future markerسَوْفَ نَبْدَأُ قَرِيبًا.
لَنْ + الْمُضَارِعُ الْمَنْصُوبُfuture negativeلَنْ أَتَأَخَّرَ غَدًا.
الْمُضَارِعُ + وَقْتٌ مُسْتَقْبَلِيٌّpossible for an arrangement in contextأُسَافِرُ غَدًا.
IGCSE clarity: أُسَافِرُ غَدًا can be natural for an arranged plan, but سَأُسَافِرُ غَدًا is clearer and safer when demonstrating future control.

Three-time-frame communication

📖 Reading timeline

أَمْسِ دَرَسْتُ فِي الْمَكْتَبَةِ. الْيَوْمَ أُرَاجِعُ فِي الْبَيْتِ، وَغَدًا سَأَكْتُبُ الْمَشْرُوعَ.

Build a three-column timeline and copy each verb with its time expression.

🎧 Listening switch

A partner reads six sentences. Hold up PAST, PRESENT or FUTURE, then quote the word that gave you the clue.

🗣️ Topic conversation

Answer: What did you do last weekend? What do you usually do now? What will you do next weekend? Give two developed sentences for each.

🛠️ Tense-time repair

Write four mismatched sentences deliberately. Exchange, repair the verb or time phrase, and explain the intended frame.

✍️ Past–present–future paragraph

Write 100–120 words about your learning, leisure or travel. Include a completed past event, a present routine/current situation and at least two future plans.

Model: أَمْسِ أَكْمَلْتُ وَاجِبِي. الْيَوْمَ أُرَاجِعُ دُرُوسِي، وَغَدًا سَأَسْتَعِدُّ لِلِاخْتِبَارِ. لَنْ أَتَأَخَّرَ عَنْ مَوْعِدِي.
Success checklist: Use at least three past, three present/habitual and three future time expressions; use سـ or سوف clearly; include one future negative with لن as Stretch.
