The nisba, diptotes and describing a region

النِّسْبَةُ وَالمَمْنُوعُ مِنَ الصَّرْفِ وَوَصْفُ المِنْطَقَةِ

Three systems carry this lesson: forming the nationality, handling country names that refuse tanwīn, and choosing past or present according to whether you describe history or the present day.

1Meaning

What does the structure communicate?

2Form

Which word or ending changes?

3Agreement

What must match the noun or person?

4Transfer

Can you use it with new vocabulary?

مِصْر ← مِصْرِيٌّ / مِصْرِيَّةٌ
What to notice

The nisba ending carries a shadda on the yāʾ.

أَنَا مِنْ لُبْنَانَ
What to notice

A diptote takes a fatḥa in the genitive, with no tanwīn.

تُعَدُّ العَرَبِيَّةُ مِنْ أَكْثَرِ اللُّغَاتِ انْتِشَارًا
What to notice

A present passive for a fact that is true now.

1

Forming the nisba

country + ـِيٌّ (m.) / ـِيَّةٌ (f.)

The ending carries a shadda on the yāʾ. A final tāʾ marbūṭa or article is dropped first.

المَغْرِب ← مَغْرِبِيٌّ / مَغْرِبِيَّةٌالسُّعُودِيَّة ← سُعُودِيٌّ / سُعُودِيَّةٌ
2

Diptote country names

no tanwīn; fatḥa instead of kasra

A diptote takes a ḍamma when nominative and a fatḥa in both the accusative and the genitive.

أَنَا مِنْ لُبْنَانَزُرْتُ مِصْرَ فِي الصَّيْفِ
3

Past for history, present for today

نَشَأَتْ / اتَّسَعَ … vs تُهَيْمِنُ / تُعَدُّ …

Use the past for what happened, and the present for what is currently true. Mixing them deliberately is what a strong cultural text does.

نَشَأَتِ الحَضَارَةُ العَرَبِيَّةُ فِي هٰذِهِ المِنْطَقَةِتُعَدُّ العَرَبِيَّةُ مِنْ أَكْثَرِ اللُّغَاتِ انْتِشَارًا
4

Describing language use accurately

فِي بَعْضِ الدُّوَلِ / إِلَى جَانِبِ

Arabic is not the only language of the region. Name co-official languages and qualify claims rather than generalising.

الأَمَازِيغِيَّةُ لُغَةٌ رَسْمِيَّةٌ فِي المَغْرِبِ وَالجَزَائِرِتُسْتَعْمَلُ الكُرْدِيَّةُ إِلَى جَانِبِ العَرَبِيَّةِ فِي العِرَاقِ
CountryNationality (m.)Note
مِصْرُمِصْرِيٌّdiptote — no tanwīn
لُبْنَانُلُبْنَانِيٌّdiptote — مِنْ لُبْنَانَ
المَغْرِبُمَغْرِبِيٌّregular with the article
السُّعُودِيَّةُسُعُودِيٌّdrop the tāʾ marbūṭa first
1
The nisba builds the nationality

Take the country, drop any article or ending, and add ـِيٌّ for a man or ـِيَّةٌ for a woman: مِصْر becomes مِصْرِيٌّ and مِصْرِيَّةٌ. The shadda on the yāʾ is part of the ending, not an optional decoration.

2
Several country names are diptotes

مِصْرُ، لُبْنَانُ، قَطَرُ، عُمَانُ، تُونُسُ and فِلَسْطِينُ take no tanwīn and use a fatḥa where you would expect a kasra: مِنْ مِصْرَ، فِي لُبْنَانَ. Writing مِصْرٍ is a visible error.

Accuracy repair workshop

Strong learners do not only recognise an error: they identify the system and repair it.

أَنَا مِنْ لُبْنَانٍ.

أَنَا مِنْ لُبْنَانَ.

لُبْنَان is a diptote and cannot take tanwīn.

هِيَ طَالِبَةٌ مَغْرِبِيٌّ.

هِيَ طَالِبَةٌ مَغْرِبِيَّةٌ.

The nisba adjective must agree with its feminine noun.

العَرَبِيَّةُ هِيَ اللُّغَةُ الوَحِيدَةُ فِي المِنْطَقَةِ.

إِلَى جَانِبِ العَرَبِيَّةِ تُوجَدُ لُغَاتٌ أُخْرَى مِثْلُ الأَمَازِيغِيَّةِ وَالكُرْدِيَّةِ.

The region is multilingual, so the version on the left states something untrue.
