Bring F2 language into a new topicاِسْتَرْجِعْ لُغَةَ التَّعْرِيفِ وَالوَصْفِ

You already know names, ages, gender agreement and simple descriptions. Now use them to talk about the people around you.

By the end
  • Name at least 14 core family members accurately.
  • Recognise the wider IGCSE family-and-relationships bank.
  • Use ـي، ـكَ، ـكِ، ـهُ، ـهَا to show possession.
  • Create and describe a real or invented family tree.
Privacy and choice

You never need to disclose private family information. Every task may use the fictional عَائِلَةُ الرَّشِيدِ or an invented family.

يُمْكِنُكَ أَنْ تَسْتَخْدِمَ عَائِلَةً خَيَالِيَّةً.

Special father forms

أَبِي
أَبُوكَ / أَبُوكِ
أَبُوهُ / أَبُوهَا

The form changes more visibly than a regular noun.

Special brother forms

أَخِي
أَخُوكَ / أَخُوكِ
أَخُوهُ / أَخُوهَا

Use the same pattern as أَبٌ.

Mother forms

أُمِّي
أُمُّكَ / أُمُّكِ
أُمُّهُ / أُمُّهَا

Keep the shadda: مّ.

Important meaning

Choose the suffix from the owner, not from the family member. أُخْتُهُ means “his sister”; the sister is female, but the owner is male.

Build clear family sentencesجُمَلٌ وَاضِحَةٌ عَنِ العَائِلَةِ

Use هَذَا with a masculine family member and هَذِهِ with a feminine family member. Then add a name, age or description.

Masculine model

هَذَا أَبِي. اِسْمُهُ خَالِدٌ. هُوَ لَطِيفٌ وَمُجْتَهِدٌ.

This is my father. His name is Khalid. He is kind and hardworking.

Feminine model

هَذِهِ أُمِّي. اِسْمُهَا مَرْيَمُ. هِيَ لَطِيفَةٌ وَمُجْتَهِدَةٌ.

This is my mother. Her name is Maryam. She is kind and hardworking.

Relationship

هَذَا أَخِي الكَبِيرُ.
هَذِهِ أُخْتِي الصُّغْرَى.

Age

عُمْرُهُ سِتَّ عَشْرَةَ سَنَةً.
عُمْرُهَا اِثْنَتَا عَشْرَةَ سَنَةً.

Connection

وَ، أَيْضًا، وَلَكِنْ، لِأَنَّ

and · also · but · because

Agreement reminder

أَخِي لَطِيفٌ, but أُخْتِي لَطِيفَةٌ. The adjective describes the family member, so it agrees with that person’s grammatical gender.
